In the fall of 2019, Sounds True will be publishing The Karma of Cats – an anthology of writing about the spiritual gifts and teachings of our feline friends. I’m honored to be included as one of the authors in this anthology, sharing the story of my first (and best) meditation teacher: my cat, Freddie.
I’ve followed the evolution of Sounds True for over three decades. It’s one of the finest publishers of books, audio, and courses for the spiritual community, and a model of ethical, spiritually-informed business practices and values (including an animal friendly workplace!)
Sounds True’s mission is to wake up the world.
We wake up when we realize that we are interdependent and interconnected with all of life. We wake up when our heart is so overflowing that we devote our lives to being of benefit.
When we wake up, we naturally want to follow our inner sense of purpose and take good care of ourselves, each other, and our world.

Thriving As An Empath: 365 Days of Empowering Self-Care Practices
by Judith Orloff, MD
Empaths have so much to offer as healers, creatives, friends, lovers, and innovators at work. Yet highly sensitive and empathic people often give too much at the expense of their own well-being and end up absorbing the stress of others. “To stay healthy and happy,” writes Dr. Judith Orloff, “you must be ready with daily self-care practices that work.” With Thriving as an Empath, she provides an invaluable resource to help you protect yourself from the stresses of an overwhelming world and embrace the “gift of being different.”
If you want daily tools to put into action, this unabridged book is for you. Building on the principles Dr. Orloff introduced in The Empath’s Survival Guide, this book brings you daily self-care practices and support for becoming a compassionate, empowered empath.
The Empath’s Survival Guide Online Course: Life Strategies for Sensitive People
with Judith Orloff, MD
Nancy’s note: I have found the work of Dr. Judith Orloff to be very helpful in both my personal life and in my work, and many of my clients and students have been helped by her work, as well. This is an excellent course from Dr. Orloff with many wonderful tools and resources for living in this world as an empath and highly sensitive person.
A Special Invitation for Highly Empathic & Sensitive People From Judith Orloff, MD
“In this course, you’ll learn potent methods for dealing with the unique challenges of empaths — and enhance your life in many key areas.
This is a tough world for sensitive people. From the constant bombardment of the 24-hour news cycle to the presence of untold numbers of visual, audio, and chemical toxins in our environment, those of us with naturally high sensitivity can find ourselves easily overwhelmed.
And understanding can be hard to find. Have you been told you need to “grow a thick skin”? Have you been treated as if your sensitivity is some kind of weakness or character flaw?
If you feel as if you don’t fit in this world, it’s because you’re here to create a better one.”
Sensitive – The Untold Story
Sensitive -The Untold Story is based on the findings of bestselling author-psychologist, Dr. Elaine Aron and features 7-time Grammy winner, Alanis Morissette.
This is an excellent film that illuminates both the blessings and the challenges of being one of the 20% of beings with the trait of high sensitivity. (This trait is not just found in humans — over 100 species of animals have been studied, as well, and the percentage of the trait is the same.)
“[Sensitive-The Untold Story] covers such a dense amount of information, and such a wide range of how and where this trait shows up… all done in a way that is very clear, and intelligent and touching… It is an honor to have been a part of it, and to be part of this generous outreach to so many HSP’s and their loved ones. Such a major contribution to the world.” – Alanis Morissette
Harnessing Your Wayward Dog
Walks can be enjoyable, manageable, and painless.
This is an excellent article with information on harnesses and why they are both physically safer and more effective for your dogs, and also help to support, rather than negatively impact, your relationship with your canine BFF. I’ve used the Ruffwear harnesses for years with my Afghan hounds.
Dog Training and Behavior Resources
I often have clients ask me for training and behavior recommendations, so I thought I’d compile a list of some of my favorites. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but rather a good place to start with resources for positive training and creating a balanced, partnership-based human-dog relationship.
How to Speak Chicken: Why Your Chickens Do What They Do & Say What They Say
by Melissa Caughey
This is a beautiful manual of chicken language, society, sensitivity, and wisdom, written by a woman who has spent years listening to and learning from her flock.
In this lovely book (filled with really beautiful chicken photos), the author writes about the variety and nuance in chicken language, the rich complexities of chicken society, chicken intelligence, and chickens’ varied and rich emotional lives.
My favorite section of the book is the last – on chicken emotion and awareness. The author writes about chickens’ compassion, capacity for excitement, joy, mourning, and love with deep understanding and respect. As an animal communication teacher and chicken lover, I so appreciate this contribution to the world of understanding, communicating with, and caring for companion chickens.
