I am blessed to have a family of red racer (coachwhip) snakes who live on my land. They nest in a hole in the concrete near my driveway, and every year, they shed their skins in the same exact place, a few feet from their nest entrance, on the rocks near the retaining wall by the driveway.

This year, a smaller skin appeared first, and then a week or so later, a much larger skin. It’s the first time that I’ve seen two skins shed next to each other like this, and it filled me with delight!

I feel very blessed by the presence of these beautiful snake beings. They are reclusive, sensitive, and avoid human contact as much as possible, so each “sighting” is a gift. One year I surprised them (and me!) as they were mating on the concrete near my garage. I sometimes see them in the barn, in various stages of dining on the mice who make their home there. They are a beautiful red-orange color, non-venomous, and move very, very fast (thus their common name.)

When I communicate with these snakes, I can feel their immense sensitivity, awareness, and a sense of clarity about their lives, what they enjoy, how their bodies feel, how they live in this environment and how connected they are to this particular piece of land.

They also communicate to me that they appreciate their home here, and that they are respected by me, not in danger, and also that I do not fear them. They know the presence of the dogs and stay away from their areas for the most part.

I’ve left the skins just where they are, and eventually, they will disintegrate and become part of the earth again. I am reminded by the snakes of the wonder, beauty, and joy of shedding the old, releasing, and beginning again in continual cycles of renewal.
